Organic Ethiopia Oromia comes to us from our good friends at Royal Coffee in Emeryville, CA. Grown in Oromia, a regional state in Ethiopia, this coffee is unique for a few reasons. The coffee is processed as a natural, or dried in the fruit coffee. When prepared well, this method gives coffee a unique fruit forward profile. Here’s what Royal has to say about Oromia CoffeeĀ FarmersĀ CooperativeĀ UnionĀ (OCFCU)'s coffee:

ā€œThe OromiaĀ Regional StateĀ is Ethiopia’s largest,Ā including more than 110,000 square miles and 35 million people. ItĀ touches the borders of both Kenya to the south and South Sudan to the west, and includes Ethiopia’sĀ massive capital city, Addis Ababa, along with 65% of Ethiopia coffee growing territory, as ofĀ 2014.Ā There are a number of famous coffee regionsĀ includedĀ inĀ full or in partĀ inĀ Oromia:Ā JimmaĀ andĀ IllubaborĀ in the west;Ā Harar to the northeast;Ā Arsi, borderingĀ SidamaĀ in the mid-south,Ā which produces many similar terroirs; and theĀ GujiĀ Zone,Ā where Royal also works with a diversity ofĀ forward-thinkingĀ growers and processors.Ā Ā Ā

The Oromia CoffeeĀ FarmersĀ CooperativeĀ UnionĀ (OCFCU)Ā isĀ an umbrella organizationĀ establishedĀ inĀ 1999Ā by 34 individual cooperatives interested in centralizing resources and gaining leverage in the export market.Ā Ā As of 2020,Ā OCFCU supportsĀ more than 400 individualĀ cooperatives--more thanĀ 400,000 households, by far the largest unionization of farmers in the country.Ā Premiums from coffee exports are returned directly to farmers, andĀ the unionĀ also fundsĀ organic farming programs, mill equipment purchases, and food security programs. OCFCU has established a central cupping lab to support quality control andĀ isĀ a founding shareholderĀ in itsĀ members’ bank, the Cooperative Bank of Oromia,Ā that provides pre-harvest financingĀ and crop insurance; both resources historically unavailable to rural farmers in Ethiopia.Ā Ā OCFCU has been Fairtrade and Organic certified since 2002 andĀ ever since hasĀ beenĀ one of the world’s largest suppliers of Fairtrade coffee.ā€

On the cupping table, this coffee greeted us with its intense notes of apricot, blackberry, lemon, blueberry and clean, lively acidity. This medium-light roast is delicious in all brewing methods, but really stands out as a filter coffee. OCFCU’s coffee is loaded with baked brown sugar and berry, and we’re extremely excited to share it with you.
